Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What does
IVC stand for?
'Inter Varsity Club', a rather old fashioned title that goes back
many decades. The first IVC started in the forties as a social club for
recent university graduates, hence the name. Glasgow IVC was founded
in
1975.
Who's this
club for?
Anyone who's interested in getting the most out of local activities.
The club's constitution refers to 'professionals and those with similar tastes and interests'.
Membership fluctuates annually between about 80 and 110 members with a diverse range of ages
and professions.
Why would
I want to join?
To get more out of Glasgow, make new friends...do things. People join
for all sorts of reasons. Maybe you're new to town and want to meet like
minded people or perhaps you're just sick of Saturday night TV. Joining
IVC also gives you access to a diverse range of activities which you
might
not be able to organise yourself.
Is this
a dating club?
No. We are an activities based club with a range of single people,
couples and married members.
What is
the age-range for members?
We cover a broad range of ages from 25 to 65+ with the average somewhere
between 30 and 50.
Are you
a religious or political club?
No, in fact the club's constitution specifically rules out any such
links.
Do I have
to organise an event?
Although not compulsory we expect members to try and take an active
part by organising at least one
event in the year. We have a sliding scale reduction in membership
fee for the following year depending on how many events you organise.
Organising
an event could be something as simple as booking a meal at a restaurant
or choosing a pub for a pub night.
Who runs
the club?
We have a committee that makes sure certain administrative things
happen but it's not just up to them to organise events - that's up to
all the members.
What are
the costs?
We ask that you pay a non-refundable registration fee of £10 for the first two months. This is deductable from the annual individual membership of £40 when you join. Couples can join
at a discounted rate and if you join half way through the Club year there
is a further discount. If you organise any events during the year, there is a sliding scale reduction in the following years membership fee.
We are a self
run 'not for profit' club. Events are run by members for members so there
are no additional costs beyond the cost of the membership and activities themselves.
What do
subscriptions pay for?
- maintaining this website and email groups
- printing
and mailing our monthly events newsletter 'The Grapevine' to members
- advertising
the club in magazines such as 'The List' (a local events guide)
- subsidising
official events and occasionally those which don't break even
- public liability
insurance
Are there
IVC clubs in other cities?
Yes, there are clubs in towns and cities across the UK, affiliated
through AIVC, the Association of Inter-Varsity Clubs. In Scotland there
are IVC's in Edinburgh and Dundee. You can find out about other IVC clubs
through the AIVC website.
How can
I get involved?
You can request more information, talk to our new members rep or turn
up to our regular club nights - see how to join
for more information.
